jan 21, 1924 - Leon Trotsky

Description:

Leon Trotsky was a very important figure in the October revolution of 1917. He was known as a Menshevik and as Stalin's opposition. He was the Commissioner of Foreign Affairs and War from 1917 to 1924. During Lenin’s death, he competed hard for the control of the Communist party. However, Stalin took serious action to ensure that he would emerge the winner. He stripped Trotsky of all of his power and had him assassinated by a spy. The date that Stalin beat Trotsky was very important. This could have changed history entirely. The fact that Stalin beat out Trotsky here and did it so ruthlessly meant that he would have total control over Russia for years to come. It meant that there would be no opposition to Stalin in the future. This date when Trotsky was beaten by Stalin played a huge role in the revolution, for this ensured who would have the power over the revolution in the future and gave power to Stalin for many years to come. This effectively ended the revolution and said who would have the power in Russia now. It put an end to the fighting essentially and determined who would lead Russia. Trotsky was associated with the Mensheviks and the provisional government. He was eventually exiled by Stalin in a battle for power.
