aug 17, 1807 - First Successfull Steamboat

Description:

In 1769 the first steam engine was built and inventors began tinkering to find a way to utilize it for travel in the form of a steam-powered boat. In 1787 John Fitch built a steamboat that sailed the Delaware River witnessed by members of the constitutional convention. However, the price to build and operate was untenable and so it was unsuccessful. In 1803 a European ship, the Charlotte Dundas, was tested on the Fourth and Clyde canal in Scottland. In attendance in 1807 the first successful steamboat, the Clermont, sailed the Hudson River from New York to Albany. This boat was the combined effort of Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston.
