This was a watershed event in which a supreme court ruling effectively ended racial segregation in schools. This started with the concentrated effort of the NAACP to challenge segregation. Oliver Brown was an African American man in Topeka Kansas who attempted to enroll his child in an all-white school because all others were too far away. His request was denied as were many other such attempts and a class-action suit was filed. They believed that segregation was a violation of the 14th amendment and the supreme court agreed.
