19h 26min, jan 1, 1883 y - Residential schools

Description:

The Canadian established schools in which the first nations children were taken. Children as young as 4 years old were taken to these schools were they were taught about canadian cultures and rights and wrongs of what to do. They were forced to assimilate into the canadian culture. During their early efforts the many first nation families tried to resist the government from taking their children, with only 27 students attending the 3 existing residential schools in 1885. In the residential schools the first nations children were taught household, trading, and farming skills but not with any of the education that the white students got. The students usually did not receive enough food and many students were given rotten food. They were made to feel ashamed of their culture and were not allowed to speak their own language. Many of the children attending the residential schools died of illness, abus or taking their own lives.
