jan 1, 1850 - Fugitive Slaves
Description:
The Fugitive slaves used the Underground Railroad to escape from the slave owners. Most of these slaves were African Americans. That time Slavery was abolished from British North America but no in the southern states. In order to catch the slaves United States passed the Fugitive Slave Act which allowed slave owners to catch any of the slaves that they saw who tried to escape. Around 30000 to 40000 slaves escaped to British North America in order to be free (slavery was abolished in British North America in 1833). Mary Ann Shadd, a Black Canadian Activist started two abolitionist newspapers to inform North America about the Underground Railroad and Canada West’s slavery. Without the fugitive slaves many of the African Americans would probably stay slaves continued to be abused by their owners.
