jan 25, 1649 - King Charles I is executed
Description:
Even though Charles was already dethroned, Cromwell was worried that there would be plots to reinstall the monarchy, and thus instituted Pride’s Purge and convicted King Charles of treason.
The actual execution of King Charles I is much more important than the civil war that dethroned him, because it truly exhibited the extremism of Cromwell’s parliament. The new system did not last for long before the monarchy was restored, largely because of this event.
