Fredrick Douglass: Was born a slave in Maryland. He taught himself to read. He then escaped to Massachusetts. He soon published an anti-slavery newspaper called The North Star.
Harriet Beecher Stowe: She wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852 which brought national awareness to the evils of slavery
