mar 5, 1781 - The Ratification of the Articles of Confederation

Description:

The Articles of Confederation were the first form of the constitution of the United States. They were first adopted on November 15, 1777, and were not ratified or approved until March 1, 1781. The problems amplified by this document eventually led to the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

The Articles of Confederation were important, as they set the stage for later events, including the American Constitution. As the Continental Congress attempted to include the interests and needs of every state, the result was a weak central government. Congress had no power to enforce laws, collect taxes, print currency, or enlist any national defense. This meant Congress could not pay off its debts or properly implement any laws, and also led to issues with trade between states. These issues inspired the current United States Constitution, which superseded the Articles of Confederation on March 4, 1789.
