may 6, 1963 - Joan Shogren: San Jose show

Description:

According to recent (2009) research by British computer artist Paul Brown, there had been a show of computer-generated images arranged for one day on May 6, 1963, at San Jose State University in San Jose, California, U.S.A.

Joan Shogren (b. 1932) conceived of, and led, the project wherein a computer program provided the basic artistic principles needed to create computer generated art.

Little information or research on Shogren's work as well as the degree to which this event can be considered an exhibition is available. However, if it is to be considered an exhibition, this date would mark the first public showing of Computer Art.
