apr 17, 1057 - Edward the Exile dies

Description:

Conmspiracy theorioes abound about whether he was murdered, and if so, by who. Some have suggested the Godwins did it in order to strengthen their eventual chances of a takeover. Others have suggested that William of Normandy arranged the murder to prevent an English succession. The problem is that Edward had a son, Edgar, who had excellent royal lineage, even if he was only 5 or so in 1057. It is also not known when Edward's wife and children travelled with him, whether it was in 1057 or some other time between then and 1066. Edgar was given the title Aetheling, according to a twelfth century source, by Edward himself. Some people by the late 1050s/early 1060s therefore pribably thought the succession issue settled.
