feb 4, 1945 - Yalta Conference
Description:
This was a meeting between the leaders of the Allied Powers which included, Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill. During this conference it was decided that Germany was to be divided into four different zones, each controlled by one of the Allied Powers. There was also the settling of what to do with Poland. Roosevelt wanted Poland to be able to hold their own democratic elections without interference, and took Stalin's word when he said that he would make sure they were held at a a future time (Poland was stilly heavily occupied by Soviet troops at the time). Of course, Stalin would continue on to imprison his political opponents and a rigged election would be held in 1947 where a communist government was formed within Poland. This conference was a very big deal, as it introduced vast tensions between the Soviet Union and the other Allies. Most of this tension revolved around the dealings with Poland, and would be heightened extremely when their communist government was revealed.
