jun 6, 1948 - Berlin Blockade

Description:

This event was a major point in the Cold War that really showed how fart apart the ideals were between the Soviet Union and the US. By 1947, Germany was still not able to be consolidated due to disagreement among the Western Allies and the Soviets. In retaliation, the Western Allies consolidated their three zones and began preparations for establishing an independent German republic. Stalin didn't like this, so he set up a blockade and allowed no traffic to enter West Berlin. The Allies took a very simple approach to this and set up the Berlin Airlift which brought supplies to West Berlin by plane for over a year. In 1949, Stalin finally gave up this blockade and West Berlin became a symbol for the resistance to communism. Although this ordeal may sound insignificant when compared to others, it was probably the closest that the Soviet Union came to going to war with America and the rest of the Allies.
