jun 2, 1948 - Berlin Airlift

Description:

The United States and Britain announce their plan for the "Deutschmark", a new form of currency to be introduced into West Berlin. The Soviet Union struggled to adjust to the new currency and ended up cutting all rail and water ties with West Germany and West Berlin. However, air travel was still open, beginning the Berlin Airlift. This was eleven months that Britain and the U.S. sent in planes with supplies for Berlin, making the U.S. look like heroes and Stalin look like an incompetent leader. On May 12, Stalin lifts the blockade knowing that he couldn't afford to shoot down the planes.
