In 1962, the Soviet Union began to secretly install missiles into Cuba to launch attacks on the U.S. After Kennedy discovered this and a week of tense negotiations, both sides made concessions. Kennedy pledged not to invade Cuba, and Khrushchev promised to dismantle the missile bases.

Significance to the Cold War: The Cuban Missile Crisis prompted a slight calming in U.S. and Soviet relations. The risk of nuclear war prevented large-scale fighting, as both sides realized the risk was too great.
