What it Was: First proposed by George F. Kennan in February 1946, the policy of containment focused on the containment and isolation of communism in fear that it would spread to other countries. Kennan believed that the policy would work as long as the United States and its allies opposed Soviet expansion in all parts of the world. Containment was America's strategy to stop the spread of communism through economic and military measures.

Significance to the Cold War: Containment was America's foreign policy during the Cold War. It was effective in preventing the spread of Communism.
