What it Was: Founded in 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was a peacetime military alliance that included Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United States. The nations agreed that an attack against one of them was an attack against them all. They also agreed to the creation of the Federal Republic of Germany, which later joined the NATO.
Significance to the Cold War: The purpose of the NATO was to unify and strengthen the nations against a Soviet invasion. The organization built strength against the Soviets during the Cold War.
