The EU was formed by the Maastricht Treaty. The treaty was officially signed on the 7 February 1992 by Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom, but only came into force on November 1st 1993
