oct 22, 1962 - Cuban Missile Crisis
Description:
The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest that the United States and Soviet Union came to nuclear war. The Cuban Missile Crisis was caused by the Soviet Union, under the leadership of Nikita Khrushchev, placing nuclear warheads in Cuba, which had recently gone under a communist uprising led by Fidel Castro. The Americans attempted to invade Cuba in the Bay of Pigs invasion on April 17, 1961. After the invasion massively failed, President Kennedy took full responsibility for the incident. The Cuban Missile Crisis impacted the Cold War because it almost brought the entire world to nuclear destruction. It marked the time when tensions between America and Russia were at an all time high. After this incident and the Berlin Crisis, tensions began to cool between the two superpowers. Eventually, the Soviet Union fell in 1991, marking the end of the Cold War.
