sep 1, 1949 - Middle East Issues

Description:

The Middle East began seeing many major issues in the mid-twentieth century. For example, the Six-Day War was a short conflict in which the newly founded nation of Israel was invaded by its Arab neighbors, but miraculously survived (and even managed to conquer the Sinai region of Egypt). Israel was immediately recognized by President Truman and the United States. Then, Egypt came under the control of Gamal Abdel Nasser, who eventually became pro-Soviet. The events in Egypt then prompted the Eisenhower Doctrine, which said that the United States would send aid to any country in the MIddle East that requested it while under "overt armed aggression from any nation controlled by International Communism." All of this contributed to the Cold War because it spread the war to the Middle East and drew battle lines that still last to this day.
