sep 7, 1907 - "For a White Canada" Protests

Description:

On this day, thousands of people carrying banners for a "White Canada" marched on Vancouver's City Hall and rampaged through Chinatown and near the heart of Japenese communities. They smashed windows, destroyed shops, and terrorized families.

Lillian Ho Wong, who was 12 at the time, told a historian: “Papa came back and said, ‘Don’t put on the lights! And don’t sit near the windows!’ They were running through all the lanes, making all kinds of noise. We had no lights on, so they couldn’t see us. We sat in the center so that if anything happened at either end, we could still run out.”

Due to social pressures, in 1908, the Canadian Government made a deal with Japan. Japan agreed to restrict immigration of male Japanese laborers and domestic servants to 400 a year. In 1923, the Chinese Immigration Act or unofficially called Chinese Exclusion Act from entering Canada. This ban was not repealed until 1947.
