jan 1, 1927 - "Welcome to Oz" Tunnel
Description:
The “yellow brick road” that leads to Nourse in the tunnels — the tunnel in which this was painted may have existed back in 1927, when the Evans building was constructed (sources point to this tunnel connecting Evans and Nourse). The end of the road says “Welcome to Oz;” it is said that the art in the tunnels helped to “break up the monotony of walking through a dim tunnel,” but the tunnels could also be hard to navigate because they were twisted and varied in size — the original builders of the tunnels worked around living trees at the time. Artwork made the tunnels memorable, and keeps the tunnels relevant today.
