jan 5, 1989 - Tunnels closed... indefinitely?
Description:
Original Press Release:
"We're not turning our backs on the possibility of reopening the tunnels [in the future], but right now we just don't see a way to have them open and still maintain an acceptable level of safety," said Director of Facilities Keith Covey in the Jan 13, 1989 Carletonian. Carleton Vice President and Treasurer Frank Wright later explained the decision to be primarily motivated by a heightened awareness of the tunnels' liability risk: "We've had vandalism, we've had harassment of individuals and we've had injuries in the tunnels. Once you recognize that you have that kind of problem, you're vulnerable to being sued if you don't correct it." Correction turned out to mean permanent closure.
