This partitioned granted southern Ireland independence as the "free Irish state". Ulster remained part of the United Kingdom. The treaty sparked Civil War, making a remarkable historic event seen as both an achievement and a contemporary political failure. This caused Unionists to lose hope in Lloyd George- one reason for his fall in 1922.
