The Canadians were gassed in battle. Most of it missed the Canadians, but the French retreating had exposed the Canadian's left flank. General Alderson's units has shifted positions to try to cover the gap, but the Germans has cut a deep hole.
April 22 to 25, the Canadians fought to keep hold to try to defend this position. They were outnumbered, didn't have enough guns, and were outwitted, and on the 24th, they have faced a direct chlorine gas attack. They fought and fought, buying time for the British troops to rushed forward.
The Canadian Division"s trial-by-fire at Ypres had earned the Canadians who fought in the war a reputation as dependable troops, but had to pay a large price: some 6,000 casualties over the 4-day battle.
