The government and the people united in support of Britain and France. Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King declared that the only volunteers would serve overseas.
The problem about this is that Canada was not prepared. Regular army of 4,500 men,including the 51,000 (partly trained) reservist, had no modern equipment. The air force had fewer than 20 modern combat aircrafts. While the navy’s compact potensial had only 6 destroyers, the smallest class of ocean-going warships. It was quite a modest beginning, was it?
