Due to high military spending, the Soviet Union began to collapse due to a poor economy. It began to lose control of the countries that it had an influence over, as the economy was so poor that the Soviet Union couldn't keep its hold on many of these countries. The new Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, wished to reform the Soviet Union's economic issues.
