may 31, 1916 - Battle of Jutland

Description:

The largest naval battle of WWI containing the largest naval fleets, Britain and Germany, of their time. The German's plan was to ambush the Royal Fleet of Britain in order to gain control of the North Sea. However Britain was warned by codebreaking an intercepted message. Both fleets met early to the planned attack and munitions and bombshells were traded between the two. In total, 25 ships were lost and 8,500 lives lost. However this violence wasn't in vein as this proved Britain strength of control over the North Sea, and allowed them to form a blockade which had a major impact in the defeat of Germany 2 years later.
