New France tripled it population between 1713 and 1754, reaching 55,000. But, British colonies along the coast grew even faster. By 1750, 1 million people lived there. British colony actively encouraged settlement in the colonies. As a result, more farmland was needed. They started pushing westward into First Nations territory. The French were already present in this area, but they were only seeking fur. To expand the fur trade and maintain allies with the First Nation, the French build more and more trading posts throughout New France. They were essentially forts.
