feb 1, 1992 - ADAT (Alesis Digital Audio Tape)

Description:

The Alesis Digital Audio Tape (a registered trademark of Alesis) is an eight track digital tape recorder that caught the recording industry by storm when it was first released in the early 1990’s. The product was announced in January 1991, and later released in February 1992. More audio tracks could be recorded by synchronizing up to 16 ADAT machines together, for a total of 128 tracks. While synchronization had been available in earlier machines, ADAT machines were the first to do so with sample-accurate timing- which in effect allowed a studio owner to purchase 24 track tape machine eight tracks at a time. Digital transfer between ADATs in a system uses a optical fiber digital communication standard pioneered by Alesis which has become known as Lightpipe. The Lightpipe digital interface has been adopted by other manufacturers as a means of transferring digital data from other types of audio devices, such as mixers, synthesizers, and effect processors. The ADAT uses the S-VHS 1/2 inch tape format.
