apr 29, 1909 - The People's Budget

Description:

This was introduced by Lloyd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer. It raised the standard rate of income from 9d (4p) to 15.3d (7p) on incomes up to £3000 a year. Also introduced a new 'super tax' of 6d (2.5p) on incomes over £5000 a year, made death duties paid on estate values an increased taxation on the sale of alcohol, tobacco and motorcars. this aroused bitter opposition from the propertied class and conservatives attacked Liberals, stating Lloyd George was waging class war.
