jul 22, 1901 - The Taff Vale Decision

Description:

In June 1900, employees of the Taff Vale Railway Company in South Wales went on a strike with full backing from their union, the ASRS. The opposing company took the ASRS to court for illegal picketing. The opposing company won so they took the ASRS to court again claiming damages for financial losses. They won again but lost on appeal. The company then took the ASRS to the House of Lords who were in favour of the company, meaning they won again. In 1901, Balfour declared that he would not reverse this, making him seem wholly unsympathetic to the working class interests and causing unpopularity.
