In 1821, the Greeks had revolted against Ottoman rule. The bloody wars of independence shaped the Greeks by forcing them to come together from suffering in the wars. The Greeks declared their struggle as a holy war to “reconquer the rights of individual liberty”. They had the help of the Western Europeans who had admired the ancient Greek civilization. The Greeks, together with the Britain, France, and Russia pressured the Ottomans to grant independence. By 1830 the Greeks were independent but the Europeans had still pressured them to accept a German king.
