Description:

The idea for adopting a secret ballot was part of the Expression of Sentiments (#4) in the Omaha Platform. This idea was adopted by individual states, starting with Massachusetts in 1888 and ending with South Carolina in 1950. There is not an exact date in 1950 for when the secret ballot was officially adopted in South Carolina, so I used the date of the 1950 election in South Carolina. By the end of 1950, every state had adopted the secret ballot system for voting.
