Philip II launched the Spanish Armada in an attempt to punish Protestant England and Queen Elizabeth I. Elizabeth supported Protestant subjects who had rebelled against Philip II. Philip II fleet was defeated by England. This was a major setback for Spain and also weakened Spain.
