jan 1, 1831 - Belgian Independence (Independence)

Description:

In 1815, the Congress of Vienna merged present-day Belgium and the Kingdom of Holland. Belgians were against the agreement, as the two states had different languages and religions. After hearing that Charles X was overthrown, Belgians were motivated to act. They barricaded Brussels. The Dutch King tried to get his European neighbors to help him out, but they didn’t. They believed they would benefit from an independent Belgium and they were also incredibly busy dealing with revolts of their own. Therefore, Belgium became an independent, liberal state in 1831.
