nov 28, 1964 - Mariner 4
Description:
Mariner 4 was launched 3 weeks after the failure of Mariner 3, and was successful in its eight month voyage. It flew past Mars on July 14, 1965 and captured the first close-up images we have of another planet. The pictures were played back from a small tape recorder over a long period showed lunar-type impact craters.
It lasted 3 years in orbit, different from it's expected 8-month life span.
