Editor of The New York Tribune, ran for president as a nominee of the Liberal Republcian party and lost. Democrats who wanted to be appointed to office also endorsed him since their beliefs were relatively similar and the Liuberal Reppublians suported an end to recosntruction. The Liberal Republican Party and their garnering of bi-partisan support encouraged the Republicans to pass the General Amnesty Act and demonstrated the weakening of their partydue to factions at this time.
