jul 10, 1780 - Monseigneur and the Marquis

Description:

Monseigneur is a French aristocrat, and immensely wealthy, who symbolizes the French upper class. Another aristocrat is Marquis St. Evremonde, who turns out to be Charles Darnay's uncle.

Chapter's 7 through 9 detail St. Evermonde's trip to an unnamed French city, his return to his mansion, and his murder by an angry peasant.

This section sets the stage for the French Revolution, and shows the immense wealth of the French aristocracy. The murder of St. Evermonde also shows that the poor are starting to lose patience with the French upper class.

In discussions with Darnay, Marquis implies that he is fighting the freedoms of the commoners, and has a low opinion of them. He is trying to resist the inevitable, and pays for it with his life.
