Article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles, known as the war guilt clause, stated Germany was responsible for beginning World War 1. It was bitterly by virtually all Germans who did not believe they were responsible for the outbreak of the war.
The Treaty of Versailles led Germany into an economic and social turmoil, which in turn paved a path for the rise of radical extremists like Adolf Hitler.
