The Atlantic Monthly 1933, Nov - "Fascism in the Making" - F.D.R. - Not a Fascist!
This 1933 article by the political philosophy professor Max Ascoli (1898 - 1978) was quite probably written in response to a column that appeared in the May 11 issue of the Nazi newspaper, Völkischer Beobachter. The author embraced FDR's style of governance - believing him to be one of their own:
"What has transpired in the United States since President Roosevelt's inauguration is a clear signal of the start of a new era in the United States as well...[Roosevelt], too demands that collective good be put before individual self-interest. Many passages in his book [Looking Forward (1934)] could have been written by a National Socialist."
As the years unfolded, the Fascists of Europe would continue to write similar columns - but our article posted on the right argued that FDR was not a fascist.
