mar 1, 1944 - "Home protects us"

Description:

excerpt from Flaška’s autograph album:
"Just as this big mushroom protects the little one, so our Home protects us. But one day it will be us who will have to protect the others. Therefore prepare yourself for the day when it will be your turn to repay the gift. Never reflect for long if you can do a good deed, and never lose hope. Without hope we cannot exist. And never forget those you loved. Your Fiška."
-Anna Hanusová, née Flach (1944)

With the immense devastation many older Theresienstadt inmates suffered, the children of Room 28 were blessed by the protection, insulation, and education of their elders. These elders included artists and educators who prioritized these children with the utmost hope and resilience, often sharing their rations, playing games with them, teaching them, and entertaining them with performances of operas, concerts, and theater.

"We had to try to save the children from the debasement of all that is good."
-Fredy Hirsch, a Zionist youth leader
