The common ancestor of primates and rodents split into those general groups. The first primates were small, squirrel-like, tree-dwelling insectivores. The first rodents, together in the same clade with rabbits, hares, and related mammals, developed unique specialized teeth and jaws, and had reproductive strategies that were somewhat intermediate to marsupials'.
