Julian Moreno Lacalle was the first professor of color at Middlebury. Born in the Philippines, he graduated from the University of St. Thomas. He was the first director of the Middlebury Spanish Summer Language program. Although Lacalle was Filipino he was born under the Spanish colonial period and identified as Spanish amongst his peers. Later books and journals on the Spanish Language School at Middlebury clarify his Filipino descent.
He taught courses in Spanish grammar, comprehension, literature, and history at Middlebury. He is the author of books El Centenario de la Independencia de Venezuela, El Norte de la Patagonia, Elementos de Español - A Spanish Grammar, and many more.
