jan 1, 1853 - Il trovatore
Description:
based on a fairly recent Spanish play with a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, one of Donizetti's chief collaborators and hence a poet of the old school. Verdi wanted to get away from teh traditional operatic set pieces and welcomed the "new ad bizarre." He commented: "If in operas there were no more cavatinas, duets, trios, choruses, finales, etc. etc., and if the entire opera were, let's say, a single piece, I would find it more reasonable and just." But Cammarano stuck to his habits, and Trovatore remained formally conventional in its distinct numbers. It is also the most dramatically convoluted, ripe fr such inventive parody as in teh Marx Brothers' film A Night at the OPera (1935).
