Description:

Coronet Magazine 1953, March - Stalin Sent Me To Spy School - Espionage - Igor Gouzenko:He Ushered In the Cold War?

The Cold War began a few weeks after VJ-Day, when N.K.V.D. cipher clerk Igor Gouzenko (1919 – 1982) ran from the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa to the cozy confines of the headquarters of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Gouzenko declared that the Soviet intelligence agency had abused the trust placed in them during the war years and used the their alliance to set up a spy ring that stretched throughout all North America; in his possession were 109 stolen documents that proved it.

In this reminiscence, Gouzenko recalled the events that motivated him - he explains how Soviet agents operated in the West and declared his devotion to republican governments over communism.
