Der Freischutz was considered the conummate Romantic opera. THe work was innovative for its orchestration and epmphasis on comon people (das VOlk), evident in both plot and music. With Der Freischutz we see the growing importance of nationalism, of people identifying themselves primarily with their nation rather than with a religion, class, or profession. These interests would increasingly come to define how and what composers wrote and would encourage musical developments in countries beyond teh center of Europe.
