The coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte as Emperor of France took place on December 2,1804 at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris France. The coronation marked the start of a new modern empire that would rule France. Napoleon wanted to establish the authority of his imperial reign and so created a coronation ceremony that was unlike the ceremonies for the previous kings of France. Napoleons coronation was a sacred ceremony in the great Notre Dame Cathedral in the presence of Pope Pius VII.
This event caused French Nationalism to change dramatically as the people of France now had a confident, powerful leader that could lead them to domination and expansion throughout Europe.
