Nationalism Impact: 5
Description:
Meeting the of the Estates General: was the first meeting of the Estates General since 1614. The Estates General was a general assembly representing the French estates of the realm which were the clergy (First estate), the nobles (Second estate) and the common people/peasant, serfs (Third Estates). The Estates General was a meeting called to address the French financial crisis and political struggles.
Summoned by King Louis XVI, the estates general came to an end when the Third estate turned into a national assembly inviting the other to estates to join against the wishes of the King. The creation of the National assembly marks the start of the French revolution.
Through this event, the view of French Nationalism began to change as it was no longer a Monarchy ruled society but a more democratic society as people began to think for themselves and began to protest against the previous monarchy(example: the creation of the National Assembly).
