First Printed INDEX in a Book
"De arte praedicandi" by Saint Augustine
Description:
"De arte praedicandi" by Saint Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, printed by Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer in 1467 is probably the earliest example of ALPHABETICAL INDEX (more of a "Table of content") in a printed book.
Manuscripts indexes appears as early as 1130 as in the case of "Floriger Liber", written by Gregorio da Catino.
Still they will remain rarely used until the XVII century.
