Book of the Dead contained spells, prayers and incantations that they would need in the afterlife.
Began as pyramid text
Then coffin text

This Book of the Dead was found in the tomb of Hu-Nefer, who was a scribe (scribes had priestly status)Great integration of words and art.
Hunefer professes the good life he led to the gods.
Scene of judgment. Hunefer being led by Anubis (god that is associated with the dead)
Anubis weighs the heart of Hunefer against a feather from Ma’at (deity of divine order, ethical life) to see if he has led an ethical life. Thoth records the information.
Once passing the test, he is introduced to supreme god Osiris by his son Horus (falcon head).
Osiris is surround by many symbols of Egypt and rule.
Crook and flail = rule
Lotus blossom = eternal life
4 children = 4 cardinal points (they take care of the organs that would have been placed in canopic jars)
Eye with falcon = Horus; carries ostrich feather = eternal life.
Isis and Nephthys = guardians of afterlife.
